I noticed a ‘Confederate Steampunk’ thread on the Brass Goggles forum

catawampuscreations:

I feel somewhat iffy about it. I’m wondering if this is a legitimate sort of issue or not (I grew up being warned about the guys with confederate flags all over their trucks). o__o

I think my opinions on that’d be similar to those of Yo Is This Racist, pretty much. (And: is everyone on that thread white?)

The Jubilee celebrations and their accompanying hysteria all demonstrate Britain’s exclusive and narrow minded approach as to what really is British. There is a great section of British society that is not reflected in what seems to be a collective effort by some to return to the good old days and retro Britannia. Such an attitude doesn’t help address the needs of modern Britain today, a society rife with tension on all levels, whether that be class or race.

Let us not pretend for a second that what made Britain great was strong exports of crab apple punch and Devonshire clotted cream. This “great” society was built on the backs of colonised communities all over the globe, of whose diaspora continually contributes to the British economy and workforce. The Jubilee celebrations do not reflect this fact. Neither do they reflect the toil and sweat of British people of all races struggling in a class system where social mobility is further grinding to a halt.

Yeah. I mean—I can live with the embarrassment thing (I’ve had more embarrassing stuff happen to me in public), but it’s the diploma thing that worries me. And there is probably something, but I need to look at my student handbook…thingie. I’m not sure what to call it. Either way, there will be words had!

Aw, I’m glad you’re pragmatic about it. It’s still really fucking bad management, though, and it’s not like they have any way of knowing which students this is going to be a super big once-in-a-lifetime event for, either. Frumph. (Unless graduation is less of a big deal in the US? In the UK we don’t have any kind of graduation thing leaving high school/secondary school, and pretty much everyone goes to graduation at the end of uni and most people’s parents insist on coming to see where their offspring have been living for the last 3/4 years and dressing up nice and all that.)

auuuwrgh

drawing legit anime/manga styles is fucking difficult, trying to use their proportions totally ruins my grasp of how to render facial structures in 2D.

my main strategy is to draw anime-y eyes then draw a face then go back and look for reference then chop off most of the face and remove most of the detail I scribbled in and be like “oops these lines are really scrawly NO WAIT DON’T ADD MORE STUFF IT’LL RUIN EVERYTHING erase erase neaten neaten aaugh this is beyond me”

… so, sorry, Evangelion: you are my favourite ever freaky postapocalyptic giant robot  psychological horror highschool drama conspiracy-driven show, and your character design and aesthetics are super neat, but I think your art style is not for me. even though it’s really fucking cool.

have this attempt to draw Rei in her expressionless glory anyway, though, tumblr! I am kind of proud of how it is far from my normal art style and yet only slightly shite

i am looking forward to “elementary” but mostly i am looking forward to seeing what a fandom built largely upon spite will be like

some interesting fanfiction i’ll tell you what: “and then sherlock placed his lips upon joan’s, who was a woman and also lucy liu. and they kissed. with tongues. neither of them were benedict cumberbatch at all.”

the best fandom

that is what it’d be like.

(opinions on this: only slightly biased by the fact I’ve been writing tiny fiction things to try and remember how prose works so NaNoWriMo doesn’t kick my butt, and this morning I wrote the half-assed start of a fanfic epilogue to ME3 and thoroughly enjoyed being spiteful.

the first sentence was what matriarch!Liara says to that one storytelling geezer after eavesdropping on him & his pet tiny person, and it was: “That’s how you end it?”

and then she is like nah you missed the entire point of Shepard, let me tell you how that shit went down for real. but I got distracted and just wrote like 500 words of literary criticism from the perspective of an aged asari with an obvious crush on her now-mythical friend and not an actual Better Ending.)

fuck those guys, that’s fucking awful :(

I hope they apologised to you, they suck for that, especially given they asked for an rsvp. my graduation was ridiculous and…

Nope—no apology. Well, from the professor announcing for me, yes, but no one got one from Administration (go figure).

Thankfully, though, the ceremony was inside—I didn’t have to worry about dressing  in robes more fit for winter in Siberia than summer. It was about the only consolation. I’m going to try and talk to someone about all this on Monday, though. I want to know if I’m getting my expensive piece of paper or not!

They definitely owe you a piece of paper! Unless they set a date to RSVP by and you missed it, I think it’d be a totally reasonable strategy to print off a copy of whatever you sent as an RSVP and go plant yourself in the Admin building and wave it in peoples’ faces until they offer apologies and promises to sort that shit out.

You enrolled and spent howeverlong studying there and entrusted them with your education, they owe it to you to send you off proud of your accomplishments with something that recognises them. I think for us there was stuff about graduation in the official statutes, too; it might be worth looking around so you can go in there saying “these are the obligations your establishment has to its students, you’ve failed them like this”. But even if there isn’t paperwork to wave in peoples’ faces, ending your ungrad degree by getting to graduate is a pretty basic assumption everyone has about their course; I don’t think outrage or upset is out of place at the fact they cocked it up. Getting in touch and making it their job to sort it out in time to prove you’re Officially Educated is totally reasonable, I’d say be as firm as possible with them and make it totally clear it’s their responsibility to stress over that and not yours & tell them if there’s a deadline you need them to meet.

I just read this very interesting article: Why Loki Won in the Avengers. Warning: spoilers. Make sure you’ve seen the movie first before you read this.

Mind: Blown. It always bugged me that Loki was so careless about drawing the Hulk out, knowing full well he could be beaten by the creature. This is just…ahhh. AHHH.

….o___o

Haha I saw that the other day. I totally didn’t see Avengers!Loki as the type to do that much forward planning, it looked to me like he was bluffing his way along happily trusting in his opponents being stupid enough that he’d think of something in the last minute.
But then I was pretty much just watching it for the sake of superhero hijinks and pretty people. And on those fronts it delivered.

I hope they apologised to you, they suck for that, especially given they asked for an rsvp. my graduation was ridiculous and involved wearing ridiculous archaic furred garments during a heatwave, but at least it managed to print out the right bits of paper for everyone on time. (also, like, extreme awkwardness because the girl next to me in the alphabetical order we were paraded around in turned up at the very last minute wearing the wrong clothes. but they managed to give her her degree with due ceremony even despite that, so fuck your lot again!)

These were the two other things in the folder my print screen option saves to. I’m pretty pleased with that combination of images, tbh.

This is the worst attempt to convince me that buying a thing is empowering for, like, days. She uses an antiperspirant deodrant! By sweating less, she automatically becomes comfortable, and therefore a Strong Female Character! strong! while holding a baby! how empowering!
